When Marthy Lock was born in February 1870 in Dublin, Georgia, her father, John, was 43, and her mother, Loucie, was 32. She had five brothers and five sisters.​

In 1880 we find Marthy Lock living at home with her parents.  

 

Five years later, on September 27, 1885, Marthy married John Rachels. John was born about 1868.

 

The date of their deaths are unknown.

 

During the 1900 census, Marthy and John were listed as living in the McClendon household as boarders.

 

They were listed as having no children, although they had been married for 14 years.

 

The McClendon's lived next door to Marthy's brother Ennis Lock.

 

In 1921, John Rachels signed on one of the mortgage notes with Ennis.
